"تعبئة وتركيب" — compounding and refilling — has been painted on Lebanese shopfronts for decades, and few people know what it actually means. Here it is from the inside.
What compounded perfume is
A French perfume in a sealed bottle is perfume oil dissolved in alcohol — 80% or more of what you're holding. You pay for the oil, the alcohol, the glass, the box, the advertising and the distributor.
Compounding sells you the concentrated oil itself, with little or no alcohol. Longevity goes up and price comes down, because you're paying for the aromatic material rather than everything around it.
Perfume oil predates the alcohol spray by roughly five thousand years. Alcohol sprays now make up about 85% of the global market — for reasons of shipping and packaging more than of smell.
How a blend is built
Top notes — the first 15–30 minutes. Light, fast-evaporating: citrus, bergamot, fruit, mint. First impression only.
Heart — thirty minutes to three hours. The real character: rose, jasmine, spice, orange blossom.
Base — everything after, sometimes twelve hours. Oud, amber, musk, sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli, tonka.
Balancing a blend means setting the proportions so no layer swallows the others and the nose moves between them without a jump.
What we can compound
A reinterpretation of a composition you love
Bring the bottle, or just the name.
Know what you're buying: this is an interpretation, not a copy. We work with the materials available to us, not with the original house's formula. Closeness varies — oriental compositions built on oud, amber and musk get very close; modern designer scents built on proprietary captive molecules get the spirit rather than the fingerprint.
Anyone promising a 100% identical copy is selling you talk.
A fragrance that is only yours
We start from what you're drawn to, what repels you, day or evening, summer or winter — then build and adjust with you until it settles.
Refilling something discontinued
If a fragrance you love has been discontinued or priced out of reach, we can often rebuild it.
How to commission one
Come to the shop — Al-Tall, opposite the Clock Tower. Explain it in whatever words you have ("like X but softer", "something woody for winter"). Test on skin, not paper. Walk for an hour, then come back and judge. We adjust, then fill the size you want.
When compounding is right — and when it isn't
Right if: you want high longevity at a sensible price, you like oriental compositions, you want something nobody else has, or you prefer a scent that stays close to the skin.
Not right if: you want the original sealed bottle as a gift, you want room-filling projection, or you want a very close match to a modern designer scent built on captive molecules.
We say that plainly, because a customer who understands what they bought comes back.
